The San Francisco-Tiburon Ferry is Operational
A popular and worthwhile daytrip from San Francisco has long been a ferry ride across the bay to the scenic waterside cities of Sausalito and Tiburon.
However, on April 19,2024, ferry service between San Francisco and Sausalito was suspended indefinitely when a routine inspection of the landing pier in Sausalito revealed structural concerns, according to Golden Gate Ferry Service. While repair work has begun in Sausalito, ferry service to Tiburon from San Francisco has not been affected and is still operational, with multiple daily weekday and weekend trips on the schedule.
Step aboard the Golden Gate Ferry and enjoy magnificent views of the city skyline, the bay, Angel Island, and the Golden Gate Bridge. The ride to Tiburon is just 30 minutes and boats leave San Francisco as early as 7:10 am during the week. Check the full schedule and ticket prices here. Boats land in the heart of Tiburon, a small and scenic town that knows how to pack a day full of fun.
Shop along Main Street, dine on a waterfront deck, and even taste wine and champagne, try a caviar tasting, and see a movie, all in one fabulous day.
If you prefer more active pursuits, there are numerous walks and hikes around town, including the flat and paved Old Rail Trail that connects Blackie's Pasture to downtown, and St. Hilary's Open Space Preserve, a 122-acre area of wildflower-flanked hills and meadows with expansive views of the Golden Gate Bridge, San Francisco, and Tiburon.
Another short ferry hop from downtown Tiburon and riders are on historic Angel Island, the largest in the San Francisco Bay and home to an immigration museum, military buildings, and hiking trails with views you won’t find anywhere else.
Want to make a night or weekend of it? Book one of Tiburon’s two hotels, both within walking distance of the ferry landing: Waters Edge Hotel and the Lodge at Tiburon. Bungalow Kitchen stays open late on Friday and Saturday nights, too.
